It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not
the poet who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given
us the right to a fair trial, and it is the soldier----who salutes the flag, who serves the flag and
whose coffin is draped by the flag-----who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Our recently promoted, MAJ Jeffrey Schmidt, is the highlight
of our life.  He is pictured here with our daughter after serving
his third tour (1st to Bosnia 1998, 2nd 2003 & 3rd 2006 to
Iraq)  as the battery commander of 1-94FA.  We are so very
proud of all of his achievements and for the great love he has
for his country.  It is so hard to be without him for such long
periods and to be jerked from one country, state or city to the
next, but I would follow this man to the ends of the earth.  He
is our hero!

A VERY proud Army wife,

My husband, SSG Joseph E. Phaneuf II, was killed when the vehicle he
was driving hit an IED.  He was killed on December 15, 2006 in Mehtar
Lam , Afghanistan .  He was a member of the 1-102 infantry battalion
out of New Haven Ct.   He had been in Afghanistan since April of 2006.
Prior to deploying to Afghanistan he was a member of the 118th
medical battalion and had served a year in Iraq with them.  After 9/11
happened Joe felt a very strong need to do something for our country.
He had previously been a member of the National Guard.  He decided
to reenlist.  When he found out that the unit he was with would not be
getting deployed, he volunteered to go over with the 118th.  Joe’s MOS
was in communications.  He spent most of his time in Iraq working with
computers.  He came home feeling very dissatisfied.  He did not feel he
had done anything to help anyone while in Iraq .  During the year he was
home, he spent his time with our 3 kids, taking pictures and golfing.  All
of the things he loved to do.  I knew that he still needed to go out and do
something else.  With much thought and discussion, he volunteered to
go to Afghanistan with the 1-102.  Again he would be doing commo
work but it was agreed he could also be a driver and do some
“traveling”.  Joe left in January of 2006.  We were all so proud of him.
Our son Ryan age 15 and our daughters Danielle age 11 and Jordan
age 9, understood that he was going back to help.  Although they did
say this was the last time he could go away.  A sentiment shared by all.
Joe came home in August for his R&R.  It was so good to see him.  We
spent most of those two weeks just doing quiet family things.  I am so
happy to have had those two weeks.  Joe took many, many pictures of
the children and scenery in Afghanistan , and there are many pictures of
Iraq as well.  He spoke volumes through his photos.  I will someday
have his pictures made into books.  We miss him terribly but are
endlessly proud of him.

Thank you,
Michele Phaneuf

This is our soldier, Spc. Kristopher German.  He is
currently serving his 3rd deployment in Afghanistan with
the 82nd DSTB out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  His 1st
two deployments were served in Iraq with 1-41 INF out of
Fort Riley, Kansas.  He is the proud father of two
beautiful daughters, Katie 3 years old, and Taylor Grace
5 months old.  We've been married 5 years this October.
We are currently waiting for him to come home for R and
R this may.  We miss you daddy, and we are extremely
proud of you.  Love you always, Mommy, Katie and Taylor
This is our son SPC Joseph Gourdoux when he returned
home for R&R from his first deployment.  He was stationed in
Tikrit, and later in Ramadi, Iraq.  He belongs to the 961st
(Army) in Wisconsin and was borrowed by the 983rd.  He has
since returned and now in Baghdad for his 2ND deployment.
As Joe grew up his brother must have known somewhere in
his heart that his baby brother would be in dangerous
situations when he grew up.  Dave would always tell Joe to do
something and be BRAVE about it.  If it was jumping in a pond
or being a dare devil he was always BRAVE.  Joe is our
HERO.  He is (and all of our Soldiers) doing what they believe
in, and being unselfish fighting for our freedom...and he is the
bravest person I have ever known.  We miss him daily and
pray for all that they may return home safely very soon.

Proud Parents and Brother of SPC Joseph Gourdoux
America Home of the Free Because of the BRAVE!
These are our heroes, the Van Brocklin boys. My husband, Jonathan, (the one
in the glasses), and his brother,
Philip, are both US Army soldiers serving with
separate cavalry units in Iraq. They were both deployed from separate bases in
different states on the same day, October 20, 2006. On March 16, 2007, my
husband, Jon, got to come home for his 15 days R&R. A week later, his brother
arrived. My husband and I were married during his R&R in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
where they are originally from. Both Jon and Phil returned to Iraq a week apart.
They serve in different parts of Iraq and hardly ever get to see each other. Luckily
for us all having the internet, I’m able to keep in touch with both my husband and
his brother. Jon and I met online, so the internet is something dear to us. Before he
joined the Army, he worked in computer programming and web design. I used to
be an LPN and gave up nursing before I met him, to go back to school for web
design and graphic art...it was ironic that I'd fall in love with a man in the Army
who just so happen to be in the same field I was working towards. I will finish my
degree in graphic art and web design on December 14, 2007, which is also my
birthday. We have already missed Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays,
etc, since he's been gone. He and his brother were both due back in October
2007, but after returning to Iraq from their R&R, they were greeted with a warm
welcome from President Bush...a 3 month extension, so now, they will more than
likely not be home ‘til January 2008. It's so hard being married to the most
wonderful man in the world, who I love so very much, and not being able to be
with him. I have a daughter, Jasmine, from a previous marriage, who loves Jon so
very much. In her eyes and heart, he is and always will be her daddy. He took her
on instantly and has loved her as his own since day one. He's the most wonderful
daddy to her. He's never had kids of his own, so we are looking forward to
starting that "project" up when he gets home. We miss you so much, Jon! We
want you to know not a day goes by that we don't think of you, love you, and
miss you. We can't wait for you to come home! We love you so very much, baby!
Love always and forever,
your baby cakes and silly head

Charles J. Smelser Jr. home safe with the family
and newly married in April of 2007. 20 year National
Guardsman in the Transportation Corp. will soon be
retired out due to back injury.  My husband is strong,
and proud you would say he would die enlisted if
wasn't for his injury. The Army is the other half of our
family and we support him and the men and women
he serves with. He is always there for comrades just
as he is for the family.
THANK YOU CHARLES AND ALL OTHER MEN AND
WOMEN WHO SERVE SO WE CAN BE FREE
Our youngest, Sgt Adam J. Gustafson-Sugihara, age 23,
is in the US Army stationed out of Fort Bragg NC. He is
an amazing young man and the entire family is so very
proud of him. He enlisted and headed to Boot camp Jan
2003 and he has re-enlisted once. He has accumulated
1 promotion per year and is going to be accepting his
Ssgt promotion this summer. He has been to Iraq 4
times and he will be leaving again June 9th for a 5th
time. Each time he goes, my heart stops for a bit and
then we all go on, knowing God is watching out for all of
our sons, daughters, husbands, wives and all of our
loved ones.
I try and tell him of the pride and love and admiration for
what he does and who he has become, but the words fall
short. Our love, prayers and pride are with you my Baby
Son and with all the troops away from their loved ones
doing what they do.
We love you Adam and we love and pray for all of our
troops and pray for their safe and speedy return home.
God Bless and Keep
